What does it take to amass such a huge following?
For one, the Prime Minister tweets almost every other day, and he's not afraid of sending out numerous tweets on the same day. On Dec. 1 for example, he sent out a grand total of eight tweets.
And of course it doesn't hurt that 300 million people in India have smartphones, making it a larger smartphone market than the U.S.
It's not just on Twitter that he's a social media star.
Modi's also got a healthy following on Facebook, with some 42 million followers. He's also pretty active on the social networking site, where he posts pictures, participates in Facebook Lives and even makes attempts at humour.
Modi's even on Instagram, where he has 10.4 million followers.
It's not hard to see why followers are flocking towards this social media savvy politician.
