Dick Enberg,Watch The End of the Fucking World one of the great sportscasters not just of the last few decades but of all time, was mourned across Twitter and other media on Friday hours after the world learned he had died on Thursday evening at the age of 82.
Enberg's voice dominated sports for 50 years, stretching from his start as a local sports broadcaster in Los Angeles, including time calling UCLA men's basketball, until his final full-time sports role as the main play-by-play voice of the San Diego Padres from which he retired in 2016.
For many fans, including myself, we probably remember Enberg for his 25-year run at NBC where he was the voice of the network's tennis coverage, especially Wimbledon, as well as the NFL where he called many memorable moments. All told, across his career, Enberg would call 28 Wimbledon tournaments and 10 Super Bowls.
How prevalent was Enberg? He even had a terrific cameo in the original Naked Gunfilm.
On top of all that, he also was the voice of numerous NCAA men's basketball championship games, and worked for other networks like CBS and ESPN, calling baseball, golf, and tennis.
More recently, he was doing the "Sound of Success" podcast for the Podcast One network.
As one would expect with a legend like Enberg, fans and colleagues took to Twitter to mourn the loss of one of broadcasting's greats.
