History was made during the 2017 Emmy awards when Lena Waithe took home a trophy,homo eroticism making her the first black woman ever to win in the Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series category.

But it turns out, it almost didn't happen.

While at the New York Television Festival, Waithe explained that she turned down writing the Master of None Thanksgiving episode and Aziz Ansari eventually convinced her.

“Literally I got back to my hotel and they both called me on the phone and were like, ‘Let’s do the episode. Let’s do it. You need to help us write it,’” Waithe said, according to Variety. “And I was like, ‘My plate’s too full. Not going to do that. But I trust you guys. Make it happen.’”

"Aziz was like, ‘No. I can’t be that specific. That’s your world. It’s very niche.’ So I was like, ‘OK,’” Waithe explained. “He always says I didn’t want to do it because I was being lazy, but that’s not true. He’s the lazy one. That’s why he enlisted me. I just had a lot happening.”

Since the win, Waithe has been outspoken about the women of color in the industry who have come before her, and how her win will hopefully inspire the future of Hollywood.

"To be a first—what it does is it says it's possible," Waithe said at the Emmy awards. "I hope there are so many other funny women of color and women in general who now have an opportunity because this door has been opened and I hoe it will open up other peoples eyes to give women of color a seat at the table so they can tell their stories, and if you do that, you may get one of these," she said.

Who knows—with The Chi, a new show created by Waithe, premiering in January, we may have another historical moment on our hands at the next Emmys.
